The Most Commonly-used Phrasal Verbs in English: (Part 2)

 

Call back
Meaning: Return a phone call
Sentence: I'll call you back as soon as possible.

Calm down

Meaning: Become more relaxed or less upset. 
Sentence: He was upset at first, but he eventually calmed down.

Carry over
 
Meaning: Postpone until later. 
Sentence: As regards holidays, can you carry over days from one year to the next?

Cheer up

Meaning: Put someone in a better mood. 
Sentence: I told him a joke to try and cheer him up.

Close down

Meaning: Stop operating company or restaurant
Sentence: When the factory closed down, most of the employees lost their jobs.

Come forward

Meaning: Present oneself
Sentence: The Police have asked any witnesses to come forward.

Count on
 
Meaning: Rely or depend on
Sentence: I'm counting on the taxi driver to find the Parking area.

Deal with

Meaning: Take care of problem or situation
Sentence: The manager is good at dealing with difficult customers.

Do away with
 
Meaning: Get rid of 
Sentence: Some people think it's time to do away with the King.

Do without
 
Meaning: Without managing
Sentence: The shops are closed so we'll have to do without fruits.

Dress up
 
Meaning: Wearing elegant clothes. 
Sentence: Do people dress up to go to the shopping in your country?

Drop behind
 
Meaning: Fall into a position behind the others. 
Sentence: Our sales have dropped behind those of our competitors.

Drop out
 
Meaning: Leave school without finishing. 
Sentence: She decided to go to Art School, then dropped out after the first term.

Drop in
 
Meaning: Usually on the way somewhere. 
Sentence: I sometimes drop in to see my grandparents on my way home from school.
